(12)
Tuition given in the topic of H1/H2 (A Level) Maths Tutor from the desk of The Higher Council at 10:44 pm (Singapore time)

To chichipong, james, Nick, ohno, zack & zack, reyrtwe, and those of you who have emailed my sister, no I have not forgotten you.

It’s been a full day of classes for me so it has taken a while (with whatever time I have) to complete the 2010 set of ‘A’ Level Maths:

2010 A-Level October/November H1 Mathematics 8864 Paper 1 Suggested Solutions

I think I can trust the whole lot of you by now to jump in the air, perform a somersault home in on that comment button the very moment you spot a mistake, typo or a better/quicker/smarter method, and I’ll *try* my very very best to update the solutions as and when required.

Speaking of which, time to face up to the frightening list of comments over at the other blog posts … *sweats*

頑張って!!!

Hi, you know for question 1 right if i put the equation as more than and equal and less than and equal i will be penalised by one mark one no marks?

And for question 5i right, i found the coordinates of the stationary points but didnt put down whether it is max or not how many marks will i be penalised?

And like for those answers that i left it has a fraction like 1491/160 without putting it as a number and a fraction will i be penalised?

Question 5iii right, wants it in 2dp so your second coordinate is wrong! and then right for question 12 iv they want the variance of the distribution so it should be sigma squared right?

@zack: As the equation in Q1 has two real and distinct roots, its discriminant must be > 0 (cannot have equal sign). As this is a 3-mark question, you'll probably get penalized a mark or two for this.

For Q5(i), the question only requires you to find the coordinates of the stationary points. In a 4-mark H1 maths question like this, I believe that you should be ok as long as you've demonstrated clearly in your workings how you've differentiated the function and obtained the coordinates of the stationary points. So don't worry about the max/min point determination in the workings (which are left there for our own checking and completeness only :P)

Q5(iii) and the σ2 issues have been corrected in the latest version of the solutions 😀 Thanks!

for question 10 shouldn't the answer be 14.8g? and for question 12(iv) they wanted variance not mean so the answer has to be squared

oh ya and for question 8(i) do we have to do the table to show the nature of the stationary points?

sorry. for question 10 part 2 the claim is that mean mass is now less than 15g. so should be invNorm(0.05,0,1) instead of invNorm (0.95)

oh btw, 5(iii), they asked for it in 2d.p.

and for 11, they want 8 pairs of data points.

OK I've quickly updated the H1 Maths solutions with version 1.2 mainly to correct the following:

    • 5(iii): Answers are now in 2 d.p. 😛
    • 11(a): Reduced the data points down to 8 as required by the question (sorry I missed this part and ended up machine-gunning the scatter plot :P)
    • 12(iv): Changed the final answer to σ2 as question asks for variance.

    More later ...
