Hot off the Straits Times forum page: An education extremist is on the loose!
If your form teacher happens to be a certain Mdm Josephine Koh, please stop your private tuition IMMEDIATELY and show your undivided attention (yes it will be hard but try) to her in class.
Under no circumstances are you to reveal to her that you’ve been attending those shady private tuition sessions to help you catch up in your schoolwork.
All your homework questions must henceforth be directed ONLY to super teachers like her, and them alone – certainly not evil tutors who’re there to steal the credit of a “successful” system from the sovereign MOE.
Meanwhile, for your own safety, just pretend that you’ve never known your tutor(s), and good luck for your prelims.
*Shutters the front gate and windows of The Temple and hides under desk*
P.S. Seriously, Miss Loi was actually agreeing with most of her arguments (read the letter in its entirety) up till the point where she inexplicably launched her jihad against tutors lost the plot.
P.P.S. And no thanks, no amount of $$$ can make Miss Loi sacrifice her beauty sleep for the 7.30am mari kita.

My Science teacher once told me he likened himself to a police officer and tutors to security guards.

Alright, alright Miss Loi has to admit that she sometimes double-up as a feisty security guard at the Temple Gates.
Tsk tsk.

Hi Miss Loi, I've been reading your blog for a while and am a fan of yours 🙂 Even though the O levels was close to almost a decade ago for me, I still find your posts interesting to read.

When I read that article I was furious. Does it mean that more $$ for teachers would reap better educated students? Currently, some students who seek help from tutors don't even know their basics. It's appalling! Really wonder what they learn/ teach in school!

Wah.... imagine if MOE really bans tuition agencies. Then tuition become illegal and all go underground. Wow.... cool leh. Imagine the students go to Ms Loi's temple (which is relocated at some back alley) and have tuitions despite the risk of being arrested and thrown into jail.
Sounds cool. Wahahaha.
Seriously.... is that letter from ST forum or Stomp?

Now I know why this letter was published. It was against tuition agencies. Basically, everyone learns differently, some need one to one teaching while others are able to learn in a class.
If tuitions were to be "banned", can that child still learn in a class and get undivided attention so that he/she has absorbed that theory?
Is Ms Koh able to provide that just in school? Meanwhile, did she notice that parents are now sending the kids off to ballet, piano, art and all other artistic classes in hopes that their kids will be able to be above the others?

|c3^sNoW: Non-violence, comrade. Non-violence!
Har~ren: There seems to an influx of
freaksfundamentalists to ST Forums these days. Just encountered another one (read the part by Jennifer Wee).Janice: To be fair, Miss Loi feels that it's always been the ratio, and this Mdm Koh did highlighted it in her letter. But that bitter aftertaste she left at the end just threw all credibility out of the window.
For sure, this wasn't the way Miss Loi's GP teacher taught her to write essays when she was still a SYT at her JC near *gasp* Novena (!!!)
DK: Wah tuition to become an underground 革命 movement?! Imagine The Temple's scholars burning their books and exam papers before the soldiers arrive!
WishBoNe: Ban the ballet classes! Burn the pianos! Ban all arts schools! They only steal credit from MOE's holistic approach. Ex-piano/ballet/arts tutors can then consider joining MOE to teach these subjects as teaching will be more attractive with better pay and perks.

What a ridiculous article with fallible arguments, how can she assume that the act of paying teachers more would translate into better education for students?! Even if they manage to attract/hire more teachers and achieve a class size of 20, can one teacher guarantee undivided attention and ensure that every child fully understands every single thing taught in class?? She's obviously not getting the point that some children learn slower, some can't keep up, and that's precisely what tuition is for right, to help the child keep abreast with schoolwork! Ludicrous generalisations! She might as well argue that only by banning external piano/ballet/dance/swimming lessons and channelling the money to MOE schools would we produce world class athletes and musicians! >.< What rubbish la!
